Botox Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

This is different from Botox Therapeutic which has a primary use of relieving pain.   Another popular use of therapeutic Botox is to treat overactive sweat glands, eliminating the embarrassment of sweaty underarms.

Who is Botox Cosmetic For?

Botox, (Botulinum toxin injection) is approved for patients who are 18 years and older and most experts agree that patients in their mid to late 20s and early 30s are at a good age for preventative Botox treatment.

Botox is recommended for patients who want to address fine lines and wrinkles on their face. Treatment of frown lines and crow’s feet, which are the cosmetic indications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and horizontal forehead lines, offers predictable results, has few adverse effects, and is associated with high patient satisfaction.

How Does Botox Cosmetic Work?

Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can’t contract. That makes wrinkles relax and soften.

Botox is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines.

Important Facts About Botox:

  • Botox injections take less than 15 minutes, with such a quick treatment time and no recovery needed, it’s possible to fit Botox injections into even the busiest schedule. Stop in on your way to work, during your lunch break, or while waiting for the kids to finish their piano lesson. The scheduling possibilities are endless.
  • More men are getting Botox than ever before. Botox was once aimed primarily at women, but men are increasingly interested in enjoying the benefits of a smoother, younger-looking face. Since 2000, the number of men receiving injections has increased by well over 300 percent.

  • Botox is safe and effective.  Knowing that Botox is made from a bacterial toxin may alarm you at first. However, thanks to the long history and extensive research Botox has undergone, it’s one of the safest cosmetic procedures available today. It has a success rate of well over 99 percent and treats a surprising range of cosmetic and medical ailments.
  • Botox is long-lasting.  The effects of a single injection can last for three to four months. Making regular visits to the cosmetic injector is the best way to maintain your youthful look. Luckily, Botox is an affordable, minimally invasive process that feels like nothing more than a pinprick.

How is Botox Cosmetic administered?

BOTOX is injected with a micro-needle into the muscles or areas that your individual needs require. The most requested areas of treatment and complaint are the forehead and outer eye area. One to three injections are usually given per muscle.  The units of Botox in each muscle is determined by the Doctor depending  on age, skin condition and Botox tolerance or resistance.

Botox Treatment Areas

Botox is injected using small needles to minimize pain. Your doctor may numb the injection site ahead of time with ice packs or topical numbing cream. You may be asked to make facial expressions like squinting, smiling or frowning to help your doctor locate the best site for injection.

Botox is typically priced per unit. Some areas require more units than others, and some also respond better to treatment than others and the effects will vary from person to person.

The forehead is the most common Botox injection site, as it’s where many people first see the signs of aging. Horizontal wrinkles along the brow are easily treated with Botox injections.

Between Eyebrows

The area between your eyebrows, also known as the glabella, or “11” lines, is also a popular treatment area. Smoothing out these vertical wrinkles corrects a tired or angry appearance for a more vibrant look.

Upper Eyebrow

Botox injected into the upper eyebrow can mimic the effects of an eyebrow lift by relaxing the muscles that cause upper eyelids to droop.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the small, branching wrinkles that form at the corner of the eye when smiling. The skin in this area is much thinner than in other parts of the face, exacerbating the appearance of wrinkles.

Bunny Lines

Bunny lines, otherwise known as nasalis lines, are the rabbit-like wrinkles that appear on the side of your nose when you scrunch up your face, smile or laugh. These lines sometimes extend upwards to the lower eyelid.

Dimpled Chin

A puckered or dimpled chin can worsen with age as the muscles in the chin area become more overactive. The natural age-related loss of collagen increases this dimpled appearance. Botox smooths the chin area for a more youthful look.

Smile Lines

Lines that form at the corners of the mouth can sometimes extend downwards towards the jaw, or even cause the corners of the mouth to droop. Botox injections at this site can help you maintain a happier, more lively appearance.

Neck Bands

Both horizontal and vertical wrinkles appear in the neck area with age. Botox works by preventing neck muscles from sagging, and can also improve the jawline for a look that mimics the results of a neck lift.

Non-Surgical Nose Job

Botox applied to the base of the nose can raise the nasal tip. This works by weakening the muscles which pull the tip of the nose down as you smile or talk. Sometimes known as liquid rhinoplasty, this technique can be combined with dermal fillers for a re-contouring of the nose.

Botox Lip Flip

Otherwise known as a Botox lip lift, this technique may also be done with Botox alone or combine with lip fillers. Botox provides a fuller lip pout by mildly rolling the upper lip outward. Fine lines around the upper lip are minimized as a pleasant side effect of this procedure.

Gummy Smile Treatment

Excessive elevating of the upper lip when smiling is known as a gummy smile, as the gums above the front teeth become exposed. Injecting Botox can weaken the retractor muscles that cause this effect.

How To Get Ready For Your Botox Treatment

  1. Medications: During your consultation, be open about your medical history and any medications you are taking. Natural supplements count, too. Discuss any health conditions, illnesses, or prior skin treatments you’ve had before Botox.  Also, let the doctor know if you have respiratory issues, allergies, or if you plan on getting pregnant soon.
  2. Results: Whenever you’re getting a cosmetic procedure, it’s vital to be on the same wavelength — to have the same vision — as your doctor. Be sure that you talk about your desired outcome so you’re both in agreement with how dramatic you’d like the results to be.
  3. Medications:  there are some medications that can interact with Botox, be sure to let your doctor know fi you are taking:
    Fish oil
    St. John’s Wort
    Vitamin E
    Ginkgo Biloba
  4. Expectations: While Botox can make a dramatic difference in your face, and you can get smoother, younger-looking skin, it isn’t cosmetic surgery. Keep your expectations realistic, and you’ll be happy with the results.

Botox Cosmetics Post Treatment/Aftercare

Just as with any aesthetic procedure, there are certain precautions you should take after undergoing Botox injections. If you are looking for the best results to make the most out of your treatment, then be sure you follow these five essential Botox aftercare tips.

  1. Do Not Massage/Rub Injection Area For 24 Hours
For botox aftercare, you will need to avoid rubbing your face or apply significant pressure on it for roughly 24 hours. Otherwise, you might move the dosage into an unintended area. Although it is not a filler, it is a toxin, which is why this is an important consideration. Touching or rubbing the area can cause undesired results like drooping eyelids or nerve damage.  It’s common sense, but you have to remember it. When you get Botox, avoid touching your face, and you’ll be in great shape.
  2. Avoid extraneous exercise
For proper Botox aftercare, light to medium exercise is fine, but you may want to avoid strenuous activity for a few days after treatment so the dosage does not move to another area.
  3. Sleeping
Try to avoid sleeping on the areas treated. We know that sleeping in a specific position and staying that way can be tricky. If you think about it, how well can we control how we sleep? That said, if you received Botox on your face, it is imperative that you try to sleep on your back. The treatment needs time to settle into your muscles and lying on your stomach may prevent it from doing its job.
  4. Pain Medication
Although it’s rare, some people may experience slight pain after treatment. Like we stated above, this pain should disappear within a few days. If you feel the need to take something, ask your doctor if Tylenol is okay, he or she may prescribe you some numbing cream instead that will reduce your discomfort. Also, remember to avoid strong painkillers, they are not necessary with non-invasive procedures like Botox. Applying an ice pack to the area which can help reduce bruising, but once again consult with your doctor.
  5. Facial Exercises
After the first day, it’s time to very gently start exercising the muscles in the area. When it comes to Botox aftercare all you have to do is natural facial expressions. Smile. Frown. Grin and so on. Beyond that, Botox is suited to do its job on its own. There’s nothing in particular that you are required to do.
